Roanoke to enforce bike, skateboard ban on bridge

Violators place themselves in jeopardy of a trespassing charge, police say.

Police are now enforcing a ban on skateboarding and bike riding across the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge.

Anyone found skateboarding or bike riding on it will be barred from the bridge, then charged with trespassing if caught on the bridge again, police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said.

Trespassing is a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable with fines of up to $2,500 and up to 12 months in jail, Johnson said. Offenders will be charged with trespassing if they are on the bridge after being banned even if they don't have a skateboard or bicycle with them, she said.

No one has been charged as of Friday afternoon, Johnson said.

Signs at the bridge's entrance clearly state the prohibition.

Roanoke officials first released a statement about the ban on March 6 after city workers found 30-foot skid marks on the bridge, apparently caused by bikes or skateboards.

The bridge underwent a $4 million renovation in October and is part of the city's greenway system.

It previously gained attention before the Jan. 21 Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday because of its new slick wooden surface. Engineers applied 250 nonskid strips to the bridge's surface to prevent potential problems. They later removed the strips after they began to tear loose.
