Bedford is stepping up its efforts to rehabilitate a historic piece of vacant property.

City Manager Charles Kolakowski said proposals are being sought for the redevelopment of the city's "Old Yellow" building, including its potential lease or sale.

Built in 1912, the structure was formerly used as a school. Although it has been empty for years, the city still funds its maintenance, including about $10,000 spent last summer to replace rotting wood under the eaves.

The three-story building, which is painted yellow, is beside Bedford Middle School on Longwood Avenue.

"The proposed use has to reflect the fact that [it] is right next to a school building," Kolakowski said. "Some uses ... would not be compatible."

Old Yellow is within a historic district identified by the National Register of Historic Places.

Bids, submittable to the city manager's office, are due April 25.
