Man charged with capital murder in shooting at convenience store

The charges stem from last week's killing of Jayeshkumar Brahmbhatt.

A Roanoke grand jury has indicted Calvin Bond Watson on a capital murder charge in the slaying Thursday of a convenience store clerk on Williamson Road.

On Monday, the grand jury also indicted Watson, 51, on charges of attempted robbery, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and two counts of using a firearm in a felony in the events that led to the death of 52-year-old Jayeshkumar Brahmbhatt.

Assistant Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney John McNeil said a trial date has not yet been scheduled.

Police said that about 4:45 p.m. Thursday, a man walked into the One Stop Market in the 1700 block of Williamson Road Northeast with a gun and shot Brahmbhatt. He fled without taking any money.

Brahmbhatt died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital half an hour later.

Detectives following an anonymous tip encountered Watson outside a home on Westwood Boulevard Northwest and arrested him after he tried to run. He tried to throw away a gun that police believe was similar to the one used in the shooting, police have said.

Police originally charged Watson with murder. Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Donald Caldwell has said that prosecutors will drop the murder charge and pursue the capital murder charge. Were Watson to be convicted on that charge, he could face the death penalty.

Police also are looking into Watson's possible involvement in two other robberies: one at Advance Auto in the 1000 block of Orange Avenue Northwest on Feb. 23; and another at Go Mart in the 3500 block of Williamson Road Northwest on Feb. 26.

McNeil said Monday that no one has been charged in either of those incidents.
