Candidates yet to file for municipal election

Five Fincastle and Buchanan town council incumbents are pushing a Tuesday deadline.

Most of the incumbents on the town councils in Fincastle and Buchanan are seeking re-election May 6, but a few have not filed yet with a Tuesday deadline for candidate filings looming.

As of Friday, five of 13 council incumbents in the Botetourt County town elections had yet to file, according to the county registrar's office, and it was unclear if they plan to do so. Candidates for all May elections in the region have until 7 p.m. Tuesday to file the required paperwork to get on the ballot.

In Fincastle, as of Friday, the candidates who have filed include Mayor Scott Critzer and council members Sally Eads and Malanie Jones. Allen Brenner, who was appointed last year to fill a council seat vacated by Phebe Cress, is also running for election to serve a full term on the council.

Fincastle council incumbents Mary Bess Smith and Edward Bordett had not yet filed.

In Buchanan, Thomas Middlecamp is seeking re-election as the town's mayor. Council members seeking re-election include Carson Scaggs and C.D. Barger.

Michael Burton, who was appointed last year to fill a council seat vacated by Seth Mowles, has filed to run for a full term on the council.

Incumbents Ardelia Smith, Lottie Burks and Crystal Ware have not yet filed to be on the ballot for re-election to their council seats.

Seats in either town election in which a candidate has not filed to run can be filled by a write-in candidate who gets the most votes on Election Day -- something that's happened before in May elections in the Botetourt County towns.

One other Botetourt town, however, won't deal with a thin ballot in May. That's because Troutville has moved its town election to November.
