Steel plant catches fire
A fire burned Thursday morning at Steel Dynamics Roanoke Bar Division in Northwest Roanoke.
Firefighters received the call about 8:30 a.m., according to Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury.
The fire started while some contractors were doing demolition work, Bradbury said. The workers were welding, and sparks set some wooden beams on fire. The blaze was in an industrial area at the back of the company's property off Westside Boulevard, near the railroad tracks, she said.
Bradbury initially warned that asbestos might be in the air, which could have posed a health hazard.
"Whenever you're dealing with older buildings it's very much on your mind," said Deputy Chief Ralph Tartaglia.
All fire crews entered the scene with self-contained breathing apparatuses as a precaution, Bradbury said. It was later determined that there was not an asbestos danger, and no one was evacuated from nearby homes, she said.
The plant has an environmental engineer on site to monitor air quality, according to a news release from the steel company.
There are no damage estimates at this time, Bradbury said. No one was injured.
The plant used to be called Roanoke Electric Steel.
In April 2006, Steel Dynamics and Roanoke Electric Steel merged and the latter became a wholly owned subsidiary of SDI.
