4 dead after weekend shootings in region
A shooting near Rocky Mount, a double shooting in Roanoke and one in Martinsville are being investigated.
Three separate shooting incidents in Southwest Virginia this weekend left four people dead and two men in jail, authorities said.
Roanoke, Franklin County and Martinsville all saw their first homicides of the year.
The first incident occurred Saturday about 7:10 p.m. at the One Stop Shop in the 400 block of Doe Run Road near Rocky Mount, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators at the scene found Paten Thomas Hodges, 49, who had been shot in the abdomen with a high-powered rifle, according to a sheriff's office news release. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead about 8:30 p.m.
Officials said John David Hodges Jr., 39, of Rocky Mount was arrested Saturday night in connection with the shooting. He is charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony. He was found guilty in 1988 of manufacturing alcoholic beverages without a license according to court records and Maj. Josh Carter.
The victim and the suspect are related, according to the sheriff's office, but their specific family connection has not been released. They were reportedly in a dispute regarding John Hodges Jr.'s wife, who was once married to the victim.
About two hours after that shooting, Roanoke police were called to a double shooting in Northwest Roanoke.
Officers were called at 9:15 p.m. to the 1600 block of Mayo Drive, where they found two bodies, one male and one female, with fatal gunshot wounds, said Aisha Johnson, a Roanoke police spokeswoman.
Johnson said Sunday that DeShawn Walter Anderson, 27, of Salem is believed to have fatally shot Kiara Nicole Brown, 25, of Roanoke then turned the gun on himself.
Ann Morris, a Mayo Drive resident, said she didn't know either victim but had previously seen Brown with a young boy she believed to be the woman's son. Johnson would not comment on whether Brown had a child, and the relationship between Brown and Anderson was unclear Sunday.
Morris and other neighbors said Brown moved into the neighborhood five or six months ago.
The weekend's fourth fatal shooting, in Martinsville, in the 700 block of West Fayette Street, was reported about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
According to a news release issued by Martinsville police, officers and investigators were already near the scene of the shooting, which took place in a parking lot between the KuWat Club and the Deep Blue Sea Seafood Restaurant. Police were near the club when they heard a gunshot from the restaurant parking lot.
"They've had to go there several times to disperse crowds and kind of let their presence be known," police spokesman Officer Scott Coleman said.
The release said that as the officers responded, they were met by a large group of people running in the opposite direction. They then heard two more shots.
When the officers reached the victim, the release stated, they saw a man walking away from the scene. They detained and later arrested Brandon Clarence Page, 26, of Martinsville and charged him with murder. The victim, identified as Corey MeShawn Brandon, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Had they [police] not been so close by, it's a good chance the suspect would've gotten away," Coleman said.
