Bullet strikes man in hand as he drives
A Roanoke County man was shot in the hand while driving in the Catawba area Tuesday morning, an official said.
Howard Bowers, 54, was eastbound on Newport Road in a pickup truck just before 7:30 a.m. when a bullet came through the driver's side of the windshield and hit his left hand, said Sgt. Bryan Young with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Bowers was hit about the same time that two hunters on private land in the 6000 block of Newport Road had both shot at a deer, Young said.
Investigators are trying to determine if the bullet that struck Bowers was fired from one of the hunters' guns, Young said.
Bowers was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was scheduled to undergo reconstructive surgery, Young said. His hand was resting on the steering wheel when it was hit.
The bullet that struck Bowers and other evidence will be sent to a lab for ballistic tests, Young said.
No one has been charged.
