Memorial service for LeAndra Milliner set for tonight in Shawsville
Eastern Montgomery High School has also postponed this week's homecoming events, but football game will be played.
A memorial service has been planned for tonight for a 16-year-old Shawsville girl who was killed in a crash yesterday.
LeAndra Marie Milliner died after the pickup truck she was riding in crashed on Willis Hollow Road about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said it appears the 17-year-old driver, whose name hasn't been released, lost control of the truck. Milliner, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected.
A memorial service is planned for 7:30 p.m. at Shawsville Congregational Holiness Church.
Meanwhile, Milliner's classmates at Eastern Montgomery are finding ways to memorialize her there.
A junior at Eastern Montgomery, Milliner excelled academically, said Principal Nelson Simpkins. She played tennis, was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Spanish Club and the handbell choir, and sang in the chorus. Last year she was a member of the cheerleading team.
"It's been very difficult for a lot of our students," Simpkins said. "There's been a lot of emotion from a lot of our students."
Word spread quickly Tuesday night that Milliner had been killed, and students showed up to school today with ideas for ways to honor her, Simpkins said.
Because Milliner often wore pink-and-white ribbons in her hair, one student passed out pink-and-white ribbons. A group of students has been working to make buttons that feature her photo. A building trades class is making plans for a white cross to place at the site of the crash.
The week's planned Homecoming festivities have been canceled, Simpkins said.
The Homecoming game was scheduled for Friday night against Parry McCluer High School, with a dance to follow. The game will be played but the dance likely moved to next week, Simpkins said.
