1 injured after truck strikes car on I-81

Police said a woman was taken to the hospital after a truck hit her car while changing lanes.

A tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 81 injured a driver, tied up rush-hour traffic and led to a late night for cleanup crews, Virginia State Police said.

Police spokesman Sgt. Bob Carpentieri said the crash took place about 5:20 p.m. in the southbound lane near the Dixie Caverns exit in Roanoke County.

He said a 2006 International 18-wheeler, driven by John Swartz, 53, of Center, Ala., switched from the right lane to the left lane and, in doing so, struck a 2005 Pontiac Vibe. After striking the car, Carpentieri said, the truck ran off the road, struck a guardrail and overturned near Twine Hollow Road.

The Pontiac's driver, Stephanie Biggs, 29, of Blacksburg, was taken to Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem with what Carpentieri said were non-life-threatening injuries.

Swartz was unhurt.

Traffic was slowed by the accident but, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation's Web site, the scene was cleared within a half-hour.

The truck, owned by Willis Shaw Express of Arkansas, was carrying rubber cement in a box trailer.

Carpentieri said he did not know if any of the truck's cargo was spilled, but that at 11 p.m., crews still were working to remove the truck from the scene.

Swartz was charged with making an unsafe lane change, Carpentieri said.

The accident is under investigation.
