Report: Fire causes $150,000 damage

Fire seriously damaged a lumberyard in Carroll County on Sunday night, but it was contained without any injuries, officials said.

The blaze started about 5 p.m. at Turman's Sawmill on Expansion Drive in Hillsville, said First Capt. Paul Chappell of the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department.

Assistant Chief Donnie Spangler said he believed it may have been started by embers from a boiler on site.

"They were in the process of moving the lumberyard and had some lumber where they usually don't have it," Spangler explained. He said embers ignited a stack of wood approximately 20 to 30 feet tall and the blaze spread from there. A company truck also burned.

Crews from Galax and Laurel Fork also fought the fire, and it was under control by about 7:30.

"It's still burning now, but it's containable," Spangler said late Sunday night. He said he believes they saved about half of the lumber in the yard and said the damage estimate was approximately $150,000.
