FBI bringing sonar rig to help in search for missing boater

Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel will arrive today at Smith Mountain Lake to help search for the body of a man missing since a boating accident last week.

Sgt. Bryan Young of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said the FBI is expected to bring sonar equipment that can be placed on the lake floor to produce a 360-degree image of the lake bed. The imaging equipment, Young said, is different from the sonar equipment used last week, which was essentially dragged behind boats.

The search is aimed at locating the body of David Reynolds, 44. The Grottoes resident was one of four people in a boat that capsized Wednesday afternoon near Smith Mountain Lake Park. One man died in the accident and two others were rescued by a pair of passing boaters.

A search by divers ended Friday, but boats continued to patrol over the weekend.

In addition to the FBI, Young said, a representative from Marine Sonic will arrive today with additional equipment, including a submarine device capable of retrieving a body. The lake's volunteer rescue squad will also assist the search and handle security.
