House fire blamed on lightning bolt hitting roof

Lightning sparked a house fire that displaced a Roanoke County couple Wednesday, officials said.

Fire crews were called to the 7100 block of Deerwood Road in Northeast Roanoke County just before 3 p.m., said county Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Jennifer Conley-Sexton.

When crews arrived, they saw flames coming from the wooden house, Conley-Sexton said.

No one was home when the fire started.

It took firefighters about an hour to get the blaze under control.

Officials determined that lightning struck the house's roof and sparked the fire, Conley-Sexton said. The blaze caused about $120,000 in damage.

Shortly after the house fire, lightning struck a storage building in the 6400 block of France Drive in Northeast Roanoke County, Conley-Sexton said.

That fire caused about $8,000 in damage.
