Man faces 8 more charges in child porn case

A Roanoke grand jury handed down eight child pornography-related indictments against a Hopewell man already facing charges related to a sting operation started by a controversial citizens group.

George A. Porter, 46, was indicted in March on charges of taking indecent liberties with a minor and use of electronic means to commit that alleged crime. Monday, the grand jury added six counts of producing obscene materials involving a minor and two counts of attempting indecent liberties with a child. Assistant Roanoke Commonwealth's Attorney Patrick Kenney declined to comment on the new indictments.

Porter was arrested in January in Roanoke after authorities said he made arrangements to meet a 13-year-old girl, who was actually a police officer. Roanoke police had received a tip from a member of a group called Perverted Justice who claimed to have made first contact with Porter.

Perverted Justice says it targets men who try to solicit sex from underage girls on the Internet. The group has been praised for its cause but also criticized for its methods, and for undertaking a task that some say should be left to police.

After Porter's arrest, his computer in Hopewell was also seized and searched. His trial is scheduled for June 28.
