Botetourt deputy fired after theater incident

A Botetourt County sheriff's deputy was fired Wednesday after being charged in connection with an assault at a Roanoke movie theater.

Harry Oliver of Roanoke County was charged with assault and battery, according to court records.

Oliver had been suspended from his job with pay Monday pending further investigation, then was fired two days later, Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle said. He had worked as a Botetourt County deputy for three to four years, Sprinkle said. Oliver was off duty at the time of the incident.

Oliver did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Cliff Moneymaker, owner of the Cinema Cafe at Crossroads Mall in Roanoke, swore out warrants against Oliver and Jeremy Weddle of Salem at the Roanoke magistrate's office on Monday. Weddle also was charged with assault and battery.

A group of about eight people came to the movie theater Sunday evening and bought tickets for the WWE pay-per-view show, according to Moneymaker's wife, Patricia Moneymaker.

When they arrived, the people in the group were acting "obnoxious" and using a lot of "filthy talk," said Patricia Moneymaker, who was staffing the ticket window. She reminded the group that they were in a family-oriented venue, she said.

About 20 minutes after the group entered the theater, Cliff Moneymaker asked the group to quiet down, Patricia Moneymaker said. He was punched in the back of his head and hit in the jaw as he walked away, according to the warrants.

About 45 people, including children, were in the theater at the time, Patricia Moneymaker said.

Cliff Moneymaker, 70, was dizzy and disoriented but not seriously injured, Patricia Moneymaker said. He was checked at the scene by emergency medical technicians.

The Roanoke Police Department was called to the Cinema Cafe after the incident, but no arrests were made, spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said. The case is under investigation, Johnson said.

The Cinema Cafe sells beer and wine but has never had any trouble with violence in the four years the Moneymakers have owned the theater, Patricia Moneymaker said.
