DUBLIN — Union workers at the Volvo Trucks North America plant in Pulaski County will vote between noon to 6 p.m. Feb. 13 on a proposed new three-year contract.

Negotiators for Volvo and the some 2,800 members of United Auto Workers Local 2069 who work at the truck-manufacturing facility, the New River Valley's largest private employer, came up with the tentative contract Tuesday night. The company and union negotiators have been holding meetings since early December.

The previous contract actually expired at the end of January, but talks continued beyond that point. The union members had voted last week to authorize a strike if no agreement was reached, but the authorization was not put into effect.

Jim McNamara, a company spokesman reached Wednesday by cell phone while traveling, said he had no further comment about the proposed agreements pending ratification by the union.

The terms of the tentative contract will be mailed in letters to the union members in time for the vote.

Union employees represent 95 percent of all employees at Volvo's New River plant. The number of workers has increased in recent years following Volvo's acquisition of the Mack truck line and the closing of a Mack manufacturing facility in Winnsboro, S.C. Those Mack operations were brought to Dublin. The plant added a second shift last year.
