Curling replaces Chuck Poss, who was instrumental in forging an alliance last year with the Smith Mountain Lake Association to implement educational programs in an effort to reduce boating noise and unruly boaters at the lake. Curling was formerly the boating association's treasurer and secretary. Others who will take office this year include Brian Southard, vice president; Roy Enslow, secretary; and Jon Dabreiner, treasurer.

The 300-member boating association has advocated boating safety and education at the lake over the past eight years. The organization operates the annual Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run, which raises money for lake-area nonprofit organizations.
