Three candidates filed by Friday’s deadline to run in a special election in November for Franklin County treasurer.

The county’s current treasurer, Lynda Messenger, who was elected to a four-year term in 2011, will resign effective Nov. 15 to retire. A special election in conjunction with the Nov. 5 general election is being held to fill the position.

The following candidates are running for the seat:

  • Bradford Archer, 54, an author and chairman of the Franklin County Republican Committee.
  • Susan Wray, 39, a longtime employee of the county’s treasurer office and current chief deputy treasurer.

The treasurer serves a four-year term and is responsible for collection of all money due the county and collects personal property, real estate, state income and estimated income taxes. The treasurer’s office also collects meals tax and transient occupancy tax.
