LEBANON — A handful of protesters gathered outside the monthly meeting of a state board that has become an issue in Virginia’s governor’s race.

They were outside the meeting of the Virginia Gas and Oil Board when it met Tuesday in Russell County.

The board’s counsel, an assistant attorney general, has become a flashpoint in the governor’s race because a judge wrote that she was shocked the counsel was assisting the energy companies in their battle against landowners.

But Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli — the Republican nominee for governor — has said that is not the case and that Sharon Pigeon was focused on a narrow constitutional issue.

Democrats have seized on the issue because one of the companies is a subsidiary of a company that has donated $100,000 to Cuccinelli’s campaign.
