CHARLOTTESVILLE — Gov. Bob McDonnell's son Sean has been arrested on a public intoxication charge.

Charlottesville Police Lt. Ronnie Roberts says the 21-year-old University of Virginia student was arrested early Saturday near "The Corner," a strip of restaurants and bars across the street from the university. He says an officer patrolling the area noticed McDonnell appeared drunk, arrested him without incident, and transported him to the Charlottesville/Albemarle Regional Jail for booking.

Charlottesville General District Court records show McDonnell was released on his own recognizance. He's set to appear in court Aug. 12. The records do not list an attorney for McDonnell.

The governor's spokesman, Tucker Martin, said the incident is a personal matter that is being addressed by the family.

Public intoxication is a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum $250 fine.
