Travis Akins, a certified crime prevention specialist for the Roanoke Police Department, has filed to be an independent candidate for Roanoke sheriff on the November ballot.

Akins, who has served as a juvenile detention officer and a jail deputy before becoming a police officer, is president of Roanoke Project Lifesaver and is neighborhood watch coordinator for the city.

Two candidates, Joe Bush and Tim Allen, are seeking the Democratic Party nomination for sheriff in a primary election to be held Tuesday. Sheriff Octavia Johnson is the Republican candidate.
