It will be seven men for seven council seats in Bedford.
The city's reversion to a town system of government won't happen until July, but Bedford will hold a town council election Tuesday in order have a council in place when reversion happens.
The election is essentially uncontested. Six of the seven current city council members are running for town council jobs. Only one other person not currently on the council is running, which means seven men are running for the seven town council seats.
"Barring a write-in campaign," said City Manager Charles Kolakowski , although that appears unlikely.
Still, the election presents a little bit of drama. The top four vote-getters will not have to run for re-election until 2016. The other three will have to run again in 2014. After that, council members will serve four-year terms, with elections held every two years.
Current city council members running for the town council are Bob Wandrei, Skip Tharp, Jim Vest, C.G. Stanley, Steve Rush and Stacey Hailey. Incumbent Mary Flood is not running.
Wandrei, Tharp, Rush and Stanley won their city council races last November, making Tuesday their second council election in six months.
Robert Carson, vice president of the Bedford branch of the NAACP, is the nonincumbent running.
Wandrei is currently the mayor of Bedford. The new council will select a mayor for the town, Kolakowski said, when it holds its organizational meeting.
Tuesday's vote will be for the town council only. Candidates for the Republican nomination for the 19th House of Delegates District seat are not on the ballot.
Republicans will select their nominee during a firehouse primary from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in three locations:
