Roanoke County Republican activist RoxAnne Christley today will formally announce her intention to seek the Republican nomination for the Windsor Hills seat on the county board of supervisors.

“I have six kids; it’s their future I do it for,” she said. “I’m on a very strict budget and think every community needs to have a board of supervisors that does, too.”

Her announcement will set up a potential three-way contest for the Republican nomination.

Christley says she believes Roanoke County can operate more efficiently.

“We have one of the highest property tax rates in Virginia,” she said.

While she said it is too soon to say if running a tighter ship means a tax rate cut, “I can promise there won’t be any increases on my watch,” Christley said.

Christley and her husband, Laryn, have lived in the Back Creek area of the county for more than 20 years, raising their six children there.

She is president of the Roanoke County Republican Women’s Club and is involved in the county’s Republican Committee, the tea party and other conservative organizations.

Former Windsor Hills Supervisor Joe McNamara already has said he will seek the nomination to regain the seat he lost in 2009. Incumbent Ed Elswick said that he will formally announce his bid for re-election next month. Elswick narrowly defeated McNamara in a June 2009 primary election, then handily defeated a Democrat in the general election.

County Republicans will select nominees for the three supervisor seats up for election this year at party canvasses scheduled at three separate locations on May 11. Candidates and voters will have to show they are registered to vote in the district, and say they support GOP principles and will vote for the GOP nominee.

Candidates have a Thursday deadline to pay a $400 filing fee and declare their intention to seek the nomination .
