Authorities charge Floyd teacher with sex offense

The case follows similar charges against Montgomery and Wythe county teachers.

A Floyd County teacher was charged this week with having consensual sex with a child older than 15.

Daniel Earl Farmer, 36, has worked at Floyd Elementary School for nine years. He was arrested Tuesday by a special agent with the Virginia State Police and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class 1 misdemeanor.

The incident allegedly occurred June 22, according to court documents.

Jack McKinley, Floyd Elementary's principal, said Friday that Farmer has resigned from his job as a media specialist at the school.

McKinley said he couldn't say anything else about the charge against Farmer.

Farmer also served as an assistant coach for Floyd County High School's girls' softball team. A call to the high school wasn't returned Friday.

Farmer was released from jail on $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to have a hearing on the charge Sept. 22.

If found guilty, Farmer could face up to a year in jail and a fine of $2,500.

A similar charge against a former Christiansburg High School teacher was dropped last month.

Timothy Alan Glover, 35, of Shawsville was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after a 16-year-old student reported that she and Glover had sex in January.

Glover had resigned from his job in November after school officials began to investigate allegations of inappropriate behavior between him and the girl.

The girl later recanted her claim that she and Glover had sex, then said she had lied about lying.

The charge against Glover was dropped in August because the girl didn't testify against him.

A former Wythe County teacher still faces charges that she engaged in sexual acts with three of her 13-year-old students.

The case against Karen Susan Patton will go before a grand jury Oct. 17.
