Virginia Tech Board of Visitors to discuss tuition hikes, new programs

The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors is expected to vote on tuition changes and the establishment of a school of construction and new academic programs when it meets Sunday and Monday.

Proposed tuition changes would increase the cost of tuition, fees and room and board from $10,834 to $11,739, or 8.4 percent, for in-state students.

The increase for out-of-state students would be 6.8 percent -- from $22,293 to $23,815.

The average cost for in-state students to attend four-year public colleges in Virginia was $12,259 last fall.

The board is expected to vote on proposals to establish a school of construction and baccalaureate program in humanities, science and environment.

The board is also expected to decide on proposals to create doctorate programs in geospatial and environmental analysis and rhetoric and writing, as well as replacing the doctorate in environmental design and planning with the doctorates in architecture and design research and planning, governance and globalization.

The board will meet at the Inn at Virginia Tech for a strategic planning retreat from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday and committee meetings Monday morning before gathering at Torgersen Hall for the quarterly meeting at 1:15 p.m. Monday.
