Wythe Co. teacher charged in sex case
Karen Susan Patton was charged with carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old boy.
Wythe County Public Schools Superintendent Albert Armentrout on Monday would not say if the investigation into a seventh-grade teacher charged with having sexual relations with a 13-year-old student has turned up other possible victims.
"I can't answer that," Armentrout said, adding that the school is cooperating with the police investigation.
Karen Susan Patton, 41, was arrested Friday and charged with carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old boy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Patton taught English and was a cheerleading coach at Scott Memorial Middle School for 1 12 years, Armentrout said. She resigned Friday.
According to a search warrant in the case, instant-message communications between Patton and the student were turned over to police along with a "hand-written letter that appears to reference a sexual relationship." Patton told police the letter appeared to be written in her handwriting, according to the warrant.
The warrant said Wytheville police seized several items at Patton's home Thursday, including two computers, a digital camera and a sheet of paper with the "8th grade boys basketball team on it."
Armentrout said the school brought in a team of counselors to talk to students Monday and will stay "as long as they are needed."
A substitute teacher has been brought in to teach Patton's classes until a replacement is found, according to a letter sent home to parents by principal Sidney Crockett.
Police did not immediately respond to calls Monday.
