BLACKSBURG -- It was disappointing and dispiriting for Carol Crawford Smith to find leaks reappearing in her Draper Road dance studio ceiling days after the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" film crew left town in January.

But recently the myriad buckets that for years caught the drops of brown, oily liquid oozing from the old roof of her rented space have disappeared, thanks to town officials.

"It's nice not having these huge buckets in the lobby ... and not having a big mess," Crawford said Monday.

Soon after the makeover, Blacksburg Building Official Cathy Cook was called to the studio to inspect the leaks.

She notified Blue Ridge Real Estate, a successor company to longtime owner HCMF, that the leaks were a violation of the building maintenance codes and must be fixed immediately.

Eventually, the case was referred to Town Attorney Larry Spencer, who worked with the property managers to get the roof patched.

Recent inspections by Cook turned up no problems.

Smith was chosen last year to get a new house and remodeled studio because of her contributions to the community and the mobility problems she suffered after contracting multiple sclerosis.

A special two-hour episode of the show featuring Smith and her sons, Hunter and Garland, aired in February.

Smith has rented space at 215 Draper Road for her Center of Dance for 11 years.

Officials will continue to monitor the situation and take more action if the roof springs any new leaks, Spencer said.
