A Pearisburg man was charged Saturday after officials said he shot at his son.
Donald Raines, 66, was charged with one count each of attempted murder, discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling and assault and battery, and two counts of brandishing a firearm, Giles County Sheriff Morgan Millirons said.
Raines' son was not hurt, he said.
When the sheriff's deputies showed up at Raines' home on Bear Springs Road, Raines entered into a standoff with deputies, Millirons said.
The incident began about 6 p.m. when someone called 911 to report that one person had taken a shot at another.
Raines and his son, Aaron Raines, had been in an altercation inside the home, leading to the shooting, Millirons said. He said it appears two shots were fired.
Millirons said he didn't know what had sparked the altercation.
Donald Raines then went outside and assaulted his son's girlfriend, pointing his pistol at her, Millirons said.
Aaron Raines grabbed the gun from his father and tossed it across the road into some weeds, Millirons said.
Aaron Raines and his girlfriend, Schallyne Stone, left, Millirons said. Stone wasn't seriously hurt, he said.
No one else was at the home, he said, adding that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the incident.
When deputies and the Virginia State Police arrived, Donald Raines refused to come out of his home, Millirons said.
Giles County Sgt. Scott Moye tried to make contact with Raines by phone and through a loudspeaker, Millirons said.
After about 90 minutes, Raines came outside and was arrested without incident, he said.
Raines is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail.
