Don't know about the Dixie leagues? Looking for something to do between games?
For those in town this weekend for the Dixie Youth Baseball World Series, or perhaps the large swimming tournament over at the aquatics center, and are looking for local places to eat or waste time, we thought we'd offer our favorites. The following are the winners of our 2010 Best of the New River Valley survey, which was filled out by more than 2,500 voters.
In 1955, rather than play an all-black team from Charleston, more than 60 Little League baseball teams across South Carolina withdrew from the national youth baseball organization based in Pennsylvania and launched their own league.
The Charleston team was declared the state champion, but was not allowed to play in the Little League World Series because there had been no state tournament.
In the coming years, what became Dixie Youth Baseball grew rapidly through 11 Southern states as efforts continued to fight integration.
The league officially desegregated in 1967. However, the conferedate flag remained part of the league's official logo until 1994.
Today, more than 400,000 young boys and girls play Dixie Youth, Dixie Boys and Dixie Softball each year. It is still the major youth baseball and softball organization in the South, but is dwarfed by Little League Baseball, which has 2.1 million participants throughout the United States and world.
