Around the NRV: TV show coming to Ingles Farm; how-to remodeling clinic; more

RADFORD: "America's Heartland," a television show on PBS, will shoot a segment on Radford's Ingles Farm on Sunday, according to Deb Cooney, Radford's tourism coordinator.

According to its Web site, "America's Heartland" is a half-hour weekly show featuring stories to "celebrates our nation's agriculture," now in its fifth season.

PBS has not announced an air date for the episode.

Officials to offer remodeling advice

Homeowners can get tips about remodeling or building projects at a free how-to clinic Saturday.

Representatives from the New River Valley Home Builders Association and the Virginia Building & Code Officials Association's Region II are teaming up for the clinic, which is at 1 p.m. at the Christiansburg Recreation Center at 1600 N. Franklin St.

Representatives will offer information about building-safety issues involved in new construction, remodeling and home improvement projects and will answer questions about locating professionals who can guide and protect homeowners during the process.

Award nominations being accepted

New River Community Action is accepting nominations for both the scholarship in memory of the Rev. George Ducker and a Community Service Award in memory of Philip Sadler.

Both men were prominent figures in the area, dedicating their services to local charities, nonprofits and other community organizations.

Competition guidelines for the scholarship are as follows:

-- One $500 scholarship will be given to a low-income graduating senior who will be entering college in the fall of 2010;

-- The student must live in the New River Valley;

-- Consideration should be given to academic achievement, extracurricular and community service activities;

-- Scholarship funds are to be used for educational expenses at a college of a student's choice; and

-- An individual, group or school may nominate more than one student.

The NRCA Sadler Award will be given to an individual in recognition of outstanding community service to children, youth or adults. Nominees must live in the New River Valley.

Be sure to identify which award you are nominating the candidate for. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. March 26.
