Around the NRV: Children's play today; bridge inspections; Blacksburg citizens course

RADFORD

Children's play to be staged today

Audiences are invited to watch "Jack and the Beanstalk" today. The production is being put on by Missoula Children's Theatre and more than 60 local students.

The play will be presented at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the Radford High School auditorium. Tickets will be available at the door and are $5 for ages 4 to 11 and $7 for those 12 and older.

The touring children's group visited Radford to audition and select a cast of children to put on the production.

The Missoula Children's Theatre residency in Radford is presented locally by Radford Children's Theatre, a volunteer-based organization.

TRANSPORTATION

VDOT plans to inspect area bridges

The Virginia Department of Transportation is planning the following bridge inspections in the coming days, and work could slow traffic.

n On Sunday, the northbound Interstate 81 bridge over the railroad tracks and Virginia 641 in Montgomery County will be inspected. The bridge is north of Christiansburg at mile marker 128.7. The inspection will cause lane closures from 7 a.m. to noon.

n Also Sunday, the Virginia 611 bridge over I-81 in Pulaski County will be inspected. The bridge is near Dublin at mile marker 99.1. The inspection will cause various lane closures on northbound and southbound I-81 beneath the bridge between 7 a.m. and noon.

n Early next week, the U.S. 460 bridges over the New River in Giles County will be inspected. The eastbound U.S. 460 bridge will be inspected Monday, and the westbound bridge inspected on Tuesday. The bridges are at Glen Lyn. Work will be performed from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

BLACKSBURG

Residents can sign up for citizens course

The Blacksburg Citizens Institute will give residents the chance to meet town staff and learn more about the programs and services offered.

The nine-week free course includes classes from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, beginning April 5. Meals are included.

Participants must be 18 years or older and residents or employees of the town.

Registrations will be accepted until 5 p.m. March 22.
