Towns begin gearing up for May elections

The filing deadline is March 2 and the election is May 4.

Election season isn't over yet.

Oh sure, the November election has come and gone, but several localities in the New River Valley are now gearing up for May elections.

The mayors in Christiansburg and Radford have announced that they will seek re-election, while other council incumbents say they will make their decision soon.

The deadline to file is March 2, and the election is May 4. Seats are up for grabs in Christiansburg, Radford, Pulaski, Dublin, Glen Lyn, Rich Creek, Narrows, Pearisburg and Pembroke.

The May election in Christiansburg will be the last springtime election after voters approved a referendum in November to move local elections to November of odd-numbered years, starting in 2011. The Christiansburg council seats that are up for election are now held by Mayor Richard Ballengee, Brad Stipes, Ann Carter and Ernie Wade.

Ballengee said on Monday that he will seek re-election, and former council member Steve Huppert said he also plans to run for a seat.

Ballengee said he wants to continue to serve the town. He has served for 10 years as a council member and four years as mayor.

The 73-year-old said there are still goals he wants to accomplish for the town, such as the objectives in the Vision 2020, a long-range plan for Christiansburg that includes pursuing green initiatives, enhancing the system of walking trails and multi-use paths and promoting the new aquatics center.

Huppert, 65, served on the council from 2004 to 2008. He said he wants to do whatever he can to help the town progress. He said he supports the work to revitalize downtown and also wants to promote the aquatics center, which he think will help the town and its economy.

In Radford, Mayor Tom Starnes announced Tuesday he will see re-election. He's been in office for more than 31 years, with an additional four years as a council member.

Starnes said his experience has given him assets that will be useful to the city during the current and future financial times.

"With the economic condition in the next two to three years, I think it's important to have someone who looks at how to spend our limited funds in a fiscally responsible way," he said.

The other council members up for election are Laurie Buchwald and Bruce Brown. Buchwald said she will make a formal announcement about her future at the council's Monday meeting.

Brown said Wednesday he has not decided whether he will run for re-election.

No candidate has filed paperwork in Radford to run in the May election yet, said Registrar Tracy Howard.

Radford voters will also choose three school board members. Up for re-election are George Burris, Vanessa Duncan and Karen Gerlach.

In Dublin, the town council members that are up for election are Steve Crigger, Dallas Cox and Peggy Hemmings.

In Pulaski, the town council seats now occupied by Mayor Jeff Worrell, Larry Clevinger II, David Clark and H.M. Kidd are up for re-election.

No one has filed for the seats as of Thursday, said Pulaski County officials.

All the towns in Giles County will be holding spring elections, as well. All the mayors will be up for re-election, as well as some council seats in the communities.

No one has filed for the seats as of Thursday, county officials said.
