Montgomery County commission needs 1 new member

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors is looking for county residents who may be interested in serving on the county's transportation safety commission.

There is one vacancy on the commission, which gathers local input on highway safety issues. The appointment is for three years, and the board is seeking applicants from all districts.

The commission's meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each quarter.

Residents who are registered voters should submit a letter of intent or an application, along with a short resume, to Craig Meadows, county administrator, 755 Roanoke St., Suite 2E, Christiansburg, VA 24073. Residents also can send an e-mail to kiserjw@montgomerycountyva.gov no later than Dec. 11 about their interest.

Tea, tours part of event at Smithfield

Treats, tours and music performances are some of the activities featured during the "Holidays at Smithfield: Musical Memories" program Thursday through Sunday.

The event at the Historic Smithfield Plantation is from 1 to 5 p.m. and features tea and treats in Susanna's Tea Room and tours of the home with vintage musical instruments on display throughout.

There will also be music performances, children's activities, shopping in the museum store and greenery sales. Historic Smithfield is at 1000 Smithfield Plantation Road.

Tickets can be bought through the museum store or from the Smithfield Guild for $15 for adults and $7.50 for ages 4 to 12. Tickets at the door are $18 and $9.

Tickets are good for all four days of the event at Smithfield and for one visit to Susanna's Tea Room.

Dickens of a Night in Floyd gets under way Friday

The 10th of Dickens of a Night, a holiday celebration in downtown Floyd, is set for Friday.

The event sponsored by the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and include carolers dressed in period attire, the Young Actors Co-op performing scenes from "A Christmas Carol" and Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Merchants will be open for extended hours.

Opening ceremonies begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Hotel Floyd Pavilion, followed by performances of the Floyd Baptist Handbell Choir at the Floyd Baptist Church, Scott Perry's music students at Sun Music Hall, the Floyd County Madrigal Singers at Floyd United Methodist Church and Breaking Up Christmas at the Floyd Country Store

Montgomery County again offers ski, snowboard deal

Montgomery County parks and recreation has again partnered with Winterplace Ski Resort to offer a "Learn to Ski or Snowboard" package of five Sundays of skiing or snowboarding plus lessons and equipment.

Participants can ski any five Sundays from Jan. 24 to the end of the season between 3 and 10 p.m. Packages cost $115 for skiing and $180 for snowboarding.

Registration deadline is Jan. 18.
