Cross country meet
Several local teams and their runners performed well at the state cross country meet held over the weekend.
In Group A girls action, Radford finished third, led by Kaitlyn Smith (who finished eighth) and Amber Thompson (who finished ninth).
In Group A boys, Floyd County finished second, Radford finished third and Auburn finished 12th. At top right is the start of the race.
Floyd County was led by Austin Grubb (13th; shown in black at middle left), while Radford was led by Jared Miller (second; shown at bottom left) and Vijay Guruswamy (ninth).
In Group AA girls, Blacksburg's streak of three state titles was snapped by Hidden Valley. The Bruins finished a close second, led by Kathleen Stevens and Joanna Stevens, who finished first and second (shown at middle right). Leah Fitchett finished sixth for the Bruins.
The Blacksburg boys, meanwhile, dominated Group AA competition to win the state title. Christiansburg finished 16th.
Leading the way for Blacksburg were George Carter (fifth; shown at bottom right), Caman Skelton (11th) and Frank Locascio (15th). Christiansburg's top runner was Andy Eddleton, who finished 14th.
