1 arrested, 1 sought in cigarette theft

One of two people suspected of taking $2,600 worth of cigarettes from a Newport store last week was arrested Thursday night in West Virginia, the Giles County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

Kimberly April Rhoten, 46, of Camp Creek, W.Va., was arrested by officers from the Mercer County Sheriff's Office, according to Giles County Lt. Ron Hamlin.

When she is taken to Giles County, he said, she will be charged with breaking and entering, grand larceny and destruction of property.

Hamlin identified a second suspect as Stanley Wayne Farley, 56, also of Camp Creek, W.Va.

He said that when officers showed up at Farley's home Thursday night, Farley got away. Rhoten was arrested there.

Some cigarettes were recovered from Farley's residence, Hamlin said.

On Oct. 11, someone drove a vehicle through the front double glass doors of the Super Val U Grocery, Hamlin said, then lifted the doors to get inside.

Photos from the store's surveillance cameras show two people carrying cartons of cigarettes. The sheriff's office received calls from people who said they recognized Farley from those photos, Hamlin said.
