Building to be named after Hahn

Virginia Tech's Chemistry-Physics building will be named for former university president T. Marshall Hahn Jr. at a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. today.

The building is at West Campus Drive and Perry Street. Speakers will including Tech President Charles Steger, former Provost Dave Roselle and former Norfolk Southern CEO David Goode, according to a news release from the university.

Hahn was president of Tech from 1962-74 and is credited with modernizing the university.

Under his watch, Tech extended full enrollment to women, expanded undergraduate and graduate degree programs and eliminated the mandatory military requirement. Overall enrollment grew substantially during his tenure.

Hahn and wife Peggy Lee Hahn are known for their generosity to Tech.

One campus building already bears the Hahn name, and the campus horticulture garden on Washington Street is named for Peggy Lee Hahn.
