Police, students team up for safety

Christiansburg High School junior Robbie Martin hands out coupons for free Chick-fil-A sandwiches in the parking lot of the high school to students that are buckled up as they head home for early dismissal on Thursday.
Police and the high school's chapter of Youth Of Virginia Speak Out on Traffic Safety will wrap up the "Save Your Tailgate" traffic safety campaign on Monday.
The campaign, which started Sept. 28, is aimed at improving awareness and educating teens and parents on the importance of wearing seatbelts.
The YOVASO chapter has conducted many activities to increase awareness of traffic crashes, which contribute to 35 percent of teen deaths. One of the activities included throwing eggs at school resource officer Donnie Cromer.
On Thursday, as students were released early from the high school, members of the YOVASO chapter, the Chick-fil-A Cow and police officers handed out Chick-fil-A coupons to students who were wearing their seatbelt.
And tonight, as the undefeated Christiansburg football team takes on Hidden Valley, players will be wearing the No. 14 on their helmets to symbolize the average number of teens that die daily from traffic crashes.
"The goal is to reduce the number of deaths through awareness and hopefully reduce that number," Cromer said.
