Intersection improvement project is now complete

BLACKSBURG -- Intersection improvements along Prices Fork Road have been completed this month and should help with traffic flow, town officials said.

At the University City Boulevard and Prices Fork Road intersection, the work included adding a right turn lane onto University City, upgrading the traffic signals and adding pedestrian crossings at the intersection, said Brandon Steele, the town's urban transportation manager.

Another project affected the intersections of West Campus Drive and Prices Fork Road, Perry Street and West Campus Drive, Perry Street and Stanger Street, and Toms Creek Road and Prices Fork Road.

Construction included improving the pedestrian crossings, widening Stanger Street and West Campus Drive to add dedicated right turn lanes and adding a dedicated right turn lane from Prices Fork Road to West Campus Drive.

"We increased greatly the pedestrian crossings at each location," Steele said.

He said the work should improve traffic flow through the intersections and on Prices Fork Road.

Work started last fall.

The University City Boulevard project cost about $1.5 million and was paid for by town, state and federal dollars.

The other road work cost $3.5 million and was paid for by town, state, federal and Tech funds, Steele said.
