Radford to expand sewer capacity

The city agrees to Montgomery County's request to increase sewer capacity along Tyler Road.

RADFORD -- A vote by city council Monday night could help lead development along Tyler Road in Montgomery County.

The council voted to approve a request from the county to increase the county's sewer capacity in Radford's facilities from 250,000 gallons to 400,000 gallons per day.

For the use of Radford's facilities, Montgomery County will pay the city a one-time fee of $39,600. Usage will be increased in 50,000-gallon-per-day increments.

The county will also continue to pay Radford for use of transporting flow through the lines.

The increase is one factor in opening the door to three proposed projects spanning almost 51 acres in Montgomery County along Tyler Road at Interstate 81.

Last month, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors received three requests to rezone properties in the area to general business, with some residential uses.

The plans with the projects include three hotels, 40 homes, three restaurants, three medical office buildings, an assisted-living facility, nursing home and a two-story retail and office building, according to the applications.

"These developments fall within the area where Radford and Montgomery will both see an increase in revenues from these proposed developments," wrote city manager Tony Cox in an e-mail Tuesday. "The City and County have pledged to work together to make growth the [Virginia] 177 corridor benefit both jurisdictions.

"In addition to the direct benefit from these developments, we hope that increased activity around exit 109 will encourage additional quality development. The City sees this cooperative effort with the County as win-win for both of us."

The council also:

n Deferred voting on a compensation for meals tax collectors until the Aug. 24 meeting. If approved, restaurateurs would receive a 2 percent discount on taxes owed as compensation for collection.

n Approved an appropriation of $36,782 in Byrne Justice Assistance Grant funding through the Office of Justice to purchase police supplies, including tasers and ammunition.

n Voted in favor of a resolution in support of personal property tax relief for the 2009 tax year on personal-use vehicles. Vehicles valued at $1,000 or less will be exempt from taxation, vehicles valued at $1,001 to $20,000 will be eligible for 62 percent relief and personal-use vehicles valued at $20,001 or more will receive 62 percent relief on the first $20,000 in value.

n Voted to extend a contact with cable provider JetBroadband through the end of the year, contingent on receiving a payment from the company during a public hearing set for Aug. 24.

At a council meeting last month, officials discussed cutting the contract, describing it as unresponsive and owing the city nearly $50,000. JetBroadband is required to continue to perform maintenance, including continued service until a replacement company is brought in.
