Troopers plan 'blitz' for holiday weekend

Virginia State Police plan to be out in full force during next weekend's Fourth of July holiday, cracking down on impaired drivers with an "aggressive enforcement blitz," according to a news release.

Law enforcement officers are planning concentrated DUI enforcement operations during the holiday weekend as part of this year's regional Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign.

Checkpoint Strikeforce is a media and enforcement campaign that includes high visibility sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols as a means to educate, identify and apprehend drunken drivers, according to the news release.

Since Oct. 1, Checkpoint Strikeforce activities statewide have resulted in 1,293 DUI arrests, 1,246 safety belt citations and 387 child restraint citations.

Ten people died on Virginia's roads during the four-day Fourth of July holiday in 2008. Three of the 10 traffic deaths were alcohol-related.
