Shawsville man charged after standoff
The woman, who police aren't naming, called 911 just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and reported that Frank Edward Craig Jr., 74, was shooting at her, the sheriff's office said.
When deputies arrived, they heard two shots, the sheriff's office said.
Deputies moved the woman, who had been hiding in a camper near the house, to safety, the sheriff's office said. The relationship between Craig and the woman is unclear.
Craig refused to come out of the house, the sheriff's office said. No one else was inside with him.
Hostage negotiators with the Christiansburg Police Department attempted to talk to Craig for an hour and a half but weren't successful in getting him to come out of the house, the sheriff's office said.
Canisters of gas that contain eye irritants were tossed into the home, and tactical team members from the sheriff's office and the Blacksburg Police Department went inside and took Craig into custody without incident, the sheriff's office said.
Craig was arrested about 2:15 a.m., the sheriff's office said.
He is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on charges of maliciously shooting a firearm in a building, a felony, and reckless handling of a firearm and brandishing a firearm, both misdemeanors.
Court records show that Craig was charged with brandishing a firearm last month as well. He is scheduled for a July hearing on that charge, which is a misdemeanor.
A hearing on the charges stemming from the standoff is scheduled for August.
