Officer resigns after more drug charges

Christopher Franklin Bond, who faces drug charges in Wythe and Carroll counties, left the Pulaski force.

A Pulaski police officer charged with trying to buy methamphetamine in Wythe County resigned Wednesday, the town's police chief said.

Chief Gary Roche's announcement came just after the Virginia State Police confirmed that Christopher Franklin Bond had been served with additional charges in Carroll County on Monday.

"This resignation concludes a very difficult and embarrassing episode for the members of our agency," Roche said in a news release. "We are in the process of exploring additional measures to prevent a similar situation from being repeated in the future."

Bond, who served with the Pulaski Police Department for about two years, was placed on administrative suspension after his arrest last week.

Sgt. Michael Conroy of the Virginia State Police said Bond attempted to buy methamphetamine at a Wythe County residence. He was charged with one felony count of attempting to possess methamphetamine, one misdemeanor count of attempting to possess the painkiller Lortab and one misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana.

Bond was off duty at the time of his arrest, Conroy said.

Roche said Friday that Bond had been placed on administrative suspension. He called the situation "disappointing."

On Friday, officers searched Bond's home, which has an Austinville address but is in Carroll County, Conroy said.

A suspected meth pipe and seven firearms -- including rifles, shotguns and pistols -- were removed, he said.

As a result, Bond was charged Monday with one felony count of possession of a Schedule II drug and one felony count of possession of a Schedule II drug while in possession of a firearm, Conroy said.

He said the investigation is ongoing.

Bond had been granted bond in Wythe County and released from police custody after his first arrest, but was returned to the New River Valley Regional Jail after the second set of charges was filed, according to the office of Everett Shockley, the Dublin attorney who will represent Bond at a second bond hearing Friday in Carroll County.

Bond has preliminary hearings scheduled for July in Carroll County General District Court and August in Wythe County General District Court.
