Blacksburg council approves lease for town-owned Price House

Blacksburg's Price house property will soon be home to the nonprofit organization SEEDS.

The town council on Tuesday approved the lease of the town-owned Price House to the nonprofit.

Town Manager Marc Verniel has said the historical structure is sitting empty and town officials would like to see a tenant use the property on a regular basis.

Councilmen Mike Rosenzweig and Don Langrehr had abstained from voting during the first reading of the ordinance during a previous meeting. Rosenzweig is a co-founder of SEEDS, an educational organization with a mission to teach youth about civic responsibility and accountability in a sustainable society. Langrehr is a member of the organization's board of directors.

Rosenzweig was not at Tuesday's meeting, and Langrehr abstained from voting.

The Seeds organization now has an office at 209 N. Main St. Plans are for the organization to move this fall to the Nelson O. Price House property at 107 Wharton St.

Also Tuesday, the council scheduled a public hearing for July 14 for proposed revisions to the town's towing ordinance. The ordinance sets guidelines for private companies taking vehicles off private property.

The proposals include listing on signs the maximum state rate for towing fees, have the towing operator take photos or a video recording to document reasons for the towing and a requirement for businesses to authorize tows from the business parking lot if the tow occurs while the business is open.
