Landfill offers mulch to county residents
Free mulch will be available today to Montgomery County residents from the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority.
Interested residents should go to the landfill, 555 Authority Drive in Christiansburg, between 8:30 a.m. and noon.

Deadline looming for June primary election
Residents have until May 11 to register to vote in the state’s Democratic primary election on June 9.
In June, New River Valley residents can cast ballots in party primaries for the offices of governor and lieutenant governor.
For information about registering to vote, contact the Montgomery County registrar’s office at 382-5741.
City police to apply for federal money
Radford police plan to apply for a Justice Assistance Grant to purchase tasers, rifles, shotguns, and related equipment, supplies, and ammunition, among other items.
The city is not required to provide any matching funds to be eligible for the grant. The grant requires a public comment period, which ends May 17.

Free lesson offered at Blacksburg pool
Children and adults can get a free swimming lesson May 30 at the Blacksburg Aquatic Center.
The lessons will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon at the center at 625 Patrick Henry Drive.
Participants must be 6 months old. Children 3 and younger must have a parent participanting with them.
Space is limited. Register by 5 p.m. May 29 at the center. For more information call 961-1852.
Residents are needed to help Ytoss? effort
Volunteers are being sought to help the YMCA at Virginia Tech with its annual Ytoss? event.
The program seeks to reduce the number of items going into landfills as Tech students being moving out of their residence halls and apartments. Volunteers are needed to help sort and clean items collected at the Y Center at 1000 N. Main St. and volunteer at various campus collection points.
The event is sponsored by the YMCA at Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech Recycling, Tech’s Department of Residence Life, the town of Blacksburg and other campus and community organizations.

Applications available for Pulaski’s garden
Pulaski residents interested in participating in the town’s community garden can sign up for a 10-by-10-foot plot now.
Participants must agree to plant their garden by May 31 and keep it planted and taken care of until the fall harvest.
