Trooper shoots, kills man from Patrick Co.
The 33-year-old was shot by a state trooper after officers said he rammed two police cars.
CHECK -- Police shot and killed a Patrick County man Monday night after the man rammed a sport utility vehicle into two police cars, Virginia State Police said.
The victim was identified as 33-year-old Vincent James Lumia.
Lumia, a 1994 graduate of Auburn High School, was killed outside his mother and stepfather's house on Eanes Road Northeast in the Check area of Floyd County, Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said.
Carpentieri said Lumia was shot by a state trooper. The trooper was not named but was identified as a 27-year veteran of state police.
The trooper and three deputies with the Floyd County Sheriff's Office went to the home after receiving a call about a disturbance there about 9 p.m., Carpentieri said.
Lumia drove a Ford Explorer toward the officers, striking two of their vehicles, Carpentieri said.
The trooper fired, killing Lumia, Carpentieri said.
The trooper has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated by the state police, the sheriff's office and Floyd County Commonwealth's Attorney Stephanie Shortt.
The nature of the disturbance at the home remains unclear, and it is unclear where the call originated. Carpentieri referred questions about the initial call to the Floyd County Sheriff's Office, which said no one there was available to talk about the incident Tuesday. Shortt did not return a call seeking comment, but has said she does not comment on cases that are under investigation.
At the large, secluded home Tuesday morning, a man who identified himself as a family friend said the family was upset and was not ready to talk about what happened.
"They're still trying to let it sink in," he said.
Lumia was a certified massage therapist, according to the state's licensing database.
At Auburn High, he went by his initials, V.J., and was a track and field star who also played football and basketball.
He had small, uncredited parts in the movies "Black Knight" and "The Patriot."
