Eight of the charges brought against a former Giles County band director accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage student are moving forward.
John Stafford Maddy, 34, was the band director at Narrows High School until Aug. 1, when Giles County investigators said he admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a teenage girl and resigned.
Maddy, who lives in Peterstown, W.Va., was originally charged with 13 felonies and five misdemeanors. But at a hearing Monday in Giles County Juvenile Domestic and Relations Court, nine of the felony charges and one of the misdemeanor charges were dropped.
Maddy waived a preliminary hearing on the four remaining felony charges. The four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child while in a custodial or supervisory relationship were certified to a grand jury, which will decide whether Maddy should face a trial in circuit court.
Maddy agreed that there was enough evidence to convict him on the four misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
He was found guilty of those charges and sentenced to 90 days in jail on each conviction, but he immediately appealed and will remain free on bond.
Investigators have said Maddy and the girl became involved in February, when she was 16. They have said the relationship continued until August and that some of the offenses occurred on school grounds.
