The former band director at Narrows High School was arrested Tuesday on charges of having sex with a student.

John Stafford Maddy, 34, admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a teenage girl and resigned from his job Aug. 1, the day he was first questioned by investigators, according to Lt. Ron Hamlin of the Giles County Sheriff's Office.

Maddy, of Peterstown, W.Va., is charged with 13 felonies and five misdemeanors. The charges include taking indecent liberties with a child while being in a custodial position and crimes against nature, both felonies, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a misdemeanor.

Hamlin said Maddy's relationship with the girl began near Valentine's Day, when she was 16, and continued until this month. The girl, who is not being named by authorities, is now 17.

Hamlin said some of the offenses took place at the school and others off school grounds.

Maddy was being held without bond Tuesday afternoon at the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin.

Narrows High School Principal Rex Gearheart said only that Maddy is no longer employed by the school system.

He said he could not comment further, calling it a personnel matter.

Maddy is the second band director at the high school to be arrested on similar charges in fewer than four years.

Homer Lee White was charged in January 2005 with sexually molesting an 11-year-old boy during band class at Narrows Elementary/Middle School.

White was the music instructor at the elementary/middle school and the band director at Narrows High.

He was charged with six counts of aggravated sexual battery and tried on three. He was found not guilty in a jury trial in April of 2006.
