Floyd County man indicted on involuntary manslaughter
A Floyd County man who already faced a felony charge of hit-and-run in connection with a fatal crash in September is now charged with killing Gregory Maurice Jackson.
Anthony Edward Adams, 48, was indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on a charge of involuntary manslaughter.
The indictment alleges that Adams accidentally killed Jackson "as a direct result of his negligence in driving a motor vehicle in a manner that was so gross, wanton and culpable as to show a callous disregard for human life."
The indictment was handed up July 23, but direct indictments are sealed until they are served. Adams was arrested on the new charge Friday. According to court records, he was then released on the original bond amount of $100,000.
In addition to the hit-and-run charge, Adams had also been charged with statutory burglary and grand larceny.
Adams is accused of breaking into Duncan Jeep-Isuzu in Blacksburg and stealing a Jeep Rubicon, then striking Jackson's motorcycle with the Rubicon early Sept. 7 at the intersection of North Franklin and Cambria streets in Christiansburg.
Jackson, a 22-year-old Virginia Tech graduate, was knocked off his motorcycle. He was then run over by a Horne Funeral Service vehicle. The driver of that vehicle has not been charged.
Jackson was found alive but unresponsive. He died later that morning at Montgomery Regional Hospital.
A hearing date for Adams' trial is scheduled to be set Aug. 15.
