Blacksburg man charged with making false report

Police say a Blacksburg man who reported that someone tried to rob him July 4 made up the story and have charged him with filing a false police report.

Police were called to the 300 block of Givens Lane just before 5:30 a.m. to investigate a report of an attempted robbery, Blacksburg police Lt. Joe Davis said.

Matthew James Hudgins, 22, told police that someone approached him from behind and demanded money, Davis said. Police later determined that Hudgins had made up the story to cover for issues he was having at work, he said.

Filing a false police report is a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
