Grand jury indicts suspect in toddler's death
A jury trial has been scheduled for Sept. 8 for William Shelton.
CHRISTIANSBURG -- A Montgomery County grand jury on Tuesday indicted a Christiansburg man in connection with the death of a toddler and another with the abuse of a baby.
William Schamback Shelton, 28, was indicted on a second-degree murder charge in connection with the February death of 14-month-old Evan Tucker Lytton-McFalls, who was his girlfriend's son. According to testimony at a preliminary hearing last month, Shelton told investigators he shook the child.
A jury trial has been scheduled for Sept. 8.
Carl Sidney Wood, 21, was indicted on charges of child abuse and malicious wounding. He is accused of causing serious injuries to a child for whom he was a caregiver on Feb. 11. A trial in Wood's case is scheduled for Sept. 15.
Also Tuesday, the grand jury indicted William Shane Mattox, 30, of Christiansburg on two counts of attempted capital murder.
Christiansburg police officers testified at a preliminary hearing in May that Mattox rammed his station wagon head-on into their cruiser on Hill Street in June 2007. A trial on those charges and several others, including damaging property while a jail inmate, is scheduled for Aug. 15.
The grand jury also indicted Benjamin Ronald Wood, 43, of Blacksburg on charges of destruction of property and grand larceny.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office has said Benjamin Wood and James Leland Clark, 27, stole fiber-optic cable they may have thought was copper wire. The New Year's Eve theft from utility boxes in the 1600 block of Den Hill Road knocked out Comcast cable service for several hours.
Clark was indicted in April on the same charges by a grand jury.
Benjamin Wood has a trial scheduled for Aug. 11. Clark is scheduled to enter a plea to the charges Aug. 13.
