Write-ins, lots decide Giles County elections
Sometimes it's the little elections that get complicated.
It was that way in Giles County on Wednesday, when election officials spent the morning sorting out write-in votes, after town council elections Tuesday. Those votes decided the outcome for three seats in three towns.
Susan Buckland, a write-in candidate in the Glen Lyn race, beat out fellow write-in candidate Tammy Whitt on Wednesday by a drawing of lots. Both women received five write-in votes.
As allowed under state law, election officials broke the tie by sealing their names in individual envelopes, placing the envelopes in a bag and drawing one name randomly, county Voter Registrar Donna Altizer said.
Four candidates running on the ballot also won seats in Glen Lyn.
In Narrows, write-in candidate John Davis beat out Bill Holt. Holt was one of three candidates listed on the ballot.
In Rich Creek, write-in candidate Brian Meadows won one of three council seats. Only two candidates were listed on the ballot there.
